The job itself

The Mobile Library Service are looking to recruit a proactive, dynamic and outgoing librarian to support the delivery of its streamlined mobile library service from a variety of locations across the authority.

It requires specialist knowledge to help support the senior librarian with the vehicles and excellent communication skills to make sure that all staff are supported and up to date – always of importance but particularly at the present time. Communication and support are particularly time consuming as there are 27 different posts spread out across the authority. The majority of these staff work 6 hours or under a fortnight and do not come into the main office at Melton.

The mobile service is looking to grow and develop more outreach work and partnerships with public health – this includes the senior librarian overseeing the purchase, staffing and development of a new Public Health Vehicle within the next few months. It will be used to provide LFT and vaccinations in the most rural areas. Post pandemic this service will have the opportunity to support further residents who have been effected by COVID-19, either through long covid, a deterioration in health due to less access to health care and mental health, as well as low social confidence.

You must have excellent communication skills and a genuine enthusiasm and drive to support all sections of the community and help promote and establish good relationships with other library and council colleagues.

You will support and line manage the Mobiles Supervisor and help, support and motivate the mobile library team. You will need to demonstrate enthusiasm and motivation with a proven team working ability.  We require staff that will embrace change in a positive manner and adopt a can do attitude.  As part of the team you will support the delivery of a professional, high quality, customer focused mobile library and information service for local residents.

Your main roles are:

  • Proven ability to lead, manage, motivate and develop staff.
  • You must be able to use your initiative and prioritise your workload whilst working to a consistently high standard, sometimes under pressure and be flexible in your approach.
  • The promotion, distribution and maintenance of library stock
  • Knowledge of relevant road traffic and vehicle legislation
  • Allocate, organise and manage resources effectively and deliver on standards, targets and health and safety
  • Establish and develop effective working relationships with other library and council services
  • Keep abreast of new developments and resources and find new ways to deliver information to the community

Regular tasks include:

  • Use of IT systems, including office and specific packages – word processing, data input and processing using spreadsheets, databases and bespoke IT packages.
  • Dealing with deliveries of goods and services, stationery and stock control,
  • The promotion, distribution and maintenance of stock using the online Library Management System.
  • Shelving and maintenance of stock and general day to day administration.
  • Telephone answering, dealing with correspondence, responding to customer enquiries and requests

You must evidence:

  • Excellent customer care skills and a genuine enthusiasm for working with all age ranges and sectors of the public.
  • Management, development and motivation of staff.
  • The ability to deliver high levels of customer satisfaction by responding to individual and diverse customer needs in a timely & sensitive manner.
  • The ability to answer a wide variety of customer queries by telephone and by email.

The role can be physically demanding. You will be assisting other colleagues, moving library stock to and from shelves.  Stock work is a key responsibility of this post and you will also be restocking the warehouse area and loading/unloading crates of library materials.

A degree level qualification is essential (minimum level 6) and a management qualification would be an advantage.

If you are truly passionate about supporting the local community then we want to hear from you. This role offers guaranteed training, strong team support, excellent rewards & competitive salary.
