Description

The job itself

We are seeking enthusiastic and skilled Town Planners to join our busy Planning Service at Principal Officer level within our Strategic Development and Area Planning teams.

We are one of the largest Unitary Authorities with one of the busiest planning departments in the country (we were the 14th busiest for minor applications and 4th busiest for major applications in 2021/22), and we pride ourselves on making excellent quality decisions on all our planning matters for our residents and businesses.

We cover a large area from York to Hull and the Yorkshire coast which includes wide rural areas, affluent market towns, large regional employment sites, regeneration areas, and nationally and internationally recognised landscapes. This means we can offer a very varied and interesting workload for our planners, whether this is to an established Principal Planner looking for a new challenge or someone looking to progress their career to this level.

At this level we require a planner who can manage their own workload (including appeals) as well as support, mentor and advise colleagues, and assist the Team Leader in signing decisions and attending Planning Committee.

In return we can offer a supportive environment and a forward-looking team, always looking for new ways to improve our service. We are part of the national Design Code pilot, and we are embracing the opportunities of digital planning in our service transformation. We have an adopted Local Plan, and our latest Update of the Plan is due for examination later this year.

We believe in supporting our people to develop and we offer excellent training opportunities, both in house and with our partners for planning related subjects as well as management and leadership. We also support chartered and aspiring members of the RTPI with paid professional subscriptions and access to regular CPD.

The Council and planning department is based in the centre of the beautiful market town of Beverley, (named as one of the top 10 places to live in the north of England by Sunday Times), with outstanding schools, attractive housing, spectacular Minster and Westwood and with a vibrant town centre.

We operate a blended working approach and flexible working hours, with a mix of office and home working. We offer benefits including the Local Government Pension Scheme, paid professional subscriptions, support for CPD and other training opportunities, discounted gym membership and we may also be able to offer a relocation package.

We look forward to hearing from you if you feel you could be the right fit for our team.
