Job outline

Overall purpose

Within a flexible shift pattern to provide practical, emotional and social support to older adults living with a dementia in a specialist residential setting.  Primarily over meal times and in the communal areas of the home. Under the general supervision of a supervisory officer.

Principal accountabilities

  1. To offer choice to people who may experience some communication and comprehension impairment in a meaningful way, in relation to where they would like to sit, and what they would like to eat and drink and the level of support they require.
  2. To offer practical support to people with a wide range of needs from those that require full assistance to place food and drink to their mouth to those that require prompts and reassurance to remain independent at mealtimes.
  3. To serve meals, to clear tables, to keep tables clean and to attend to any spills etc.
  4. To support people to have a dignified mealtime offering support with aprons if appropriate and support to wipe their hands and faces after eating.
  5. To supervise communal areas of the home and act in a pre-emptive way by providing reassurance, positive distraction and validation to deescalate or reduce the likelihood of incidents and accidents from occurring.
  6. To raise the alarm in response to incidents and accidents that do occur and to follow instructions to safely mange these from the duty senior team.
  7. To complete accurate records of the daily diet and fluid intake of Service Users, to complete other relevant paperwork  including documenting an outline of any key events or incidents that may later form the base for formal reports.
  8. To take on the role of host for the communal areas of the home ensuring everybody feels comfortable and welcome, facilitating occupation and engagement and setting a therapeutic atmosphere.
  9. There are defined departmental procedures to work with all Service Users and the post holder will work within this framework.
  10. Be thoroughly acquainted with the position of fire extinguishers; escape routes and the action to be taken in case of fire.

  11. Participate in appropriate training, staff development and Quality Assurance.

  12. Comply with Council policies and procedures concerning the Welfare, Health and Safety and Equal Opportunities of all Service Users and employees.
